Before You Pack Your Bags

I was originally going to title this post:  How The Lowly Mosquito Can Affect Your Estate Plan!

Yes, I am talking about the Zika virus. According to the Colorado Dept. of Public Health and Environment (my practice is based in Colorado), there have only been two cases identified recently of the Zika virus in Colorado and both of those were people who had traveled and presumably acquired the infection in their travels.

But were those two people prepared for the possible effects of the virus – the possibility of paralysis from the Guillain-Barre Syndrome? Tragedy can happen at any time and I have often written about the “what ifs” of life and how an Estate Plan can address many of those “unknowns”.

Now is the travel season, and the best thing you can do – before you pack your bags – is to review your Estate Plan and have a current medical power of attorney in place if something happens while you are on your dream vacation.
