The Scoop on Home Health Agencies

As an estate planning lawyer many of my clients are retired, planning for retirement or approaching retirement, so this information was of particular interest to me and was something I wanted to pass along.

Recently our friends at the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College (via the great Squared Away blog – squaredawayblog.bc.edu) alerted us to a new rating system for home health agencies.

The five- star ranking system was recently announced by The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and can be viewed on the Medicare website – medicare.gov.

The new ranking (from one star to five stars) of home health agencies site can be a helpful tool for families seeking home health care in their community. Not every home health agency is represented and many fall into the category of “three-star” or adequate. Squared Away article noted that “The star ratings are a sound concept and can help older people or their family feel more comfortable about their choices.”

It is certainly worth a visit to the site (medicare.gov) to familiarize yourself with the new ‘tool , before you actually need the services of a home health agency.
